A Spirit of Excellence

Jaki Gonzalez ’21 grew up in a community where resources were scarce and opportunities were not guaranteed. Despite facing many challenges, she excelled through hard work, discipline, and a belief in the power of education to create change. Jaki’s relentless dedication to her studies led her to graduate as Valedictorian of Harvard High School’s 100th graduating class. She applied to college and became the first student in her school’s history to receive a full-tuition scholarship to an Ivy League university—earning her place at Princeton University. Jaki’s brilliance, humility, and resilience inspired everyone around her.

A Leader Beyond the Classroom

Jaki’s leadership extended well beyond academics. Whether mentoring her peers, lending a quiet word of encouragement, or leading on the basketball court, she embodied determination, teamwork, and grace. She was a role model for her classmates—a friend who uplifted others while setting the highest standards for herself.

Though Jaki’s life was tragically cut short, her legacy continues to shine. At Princeton, she thrived as part of the Freshman Scholars Institute and the Scholars Institute Fellows Program, where she guided and supported fellow students. Jaki was more than an extraordinary student—she was a symbol of hope and perseverance, proof that brilliance can emerge from even the most challenging circumstances. The Jaki Gonzalez Spirit of Excellence Scholarship honors her life, her achievements, and her enduring impact by supporting the next generation of students who, like Jaki, embody excellence, resilience, and a passion for learning.
